Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I have to tip the captain/crew, and if so how much?
Gratuity is entirely at your discretion. Should you choose to recognize the crew for their professionalism, assistance, and graciousness, it is customary to provide a tip ranging from 5% to 15% of the total charter amount prior to your departure on the final day. Our recommendation is 10% to 15% in the Caribbean. If there are multiple crew members, please present the gratuity to the captain, who will ensure its fair distribution among the crew, maintaining harmony and acknowledging their collective efforts.
What is a bareboat charter?
A bareboat charter offers you the unique experience of renting a boat without a crew or captain, allowing you to take the helm and navigate on your own. Depending on the country, you may need to present certification or demonstrate prior boating experience, such as a detailed resume of your maritime skills. Should you lack the required qualifications but still wish to enjoy a bareboat charter, you have the option to hire a professional skipper to guide your voyage, ensuring both safety and enjoyment.
What quality control measures are in place to ensure the boats are in excellent condition?
All charter companies are required to adhere to local maritime laws and regulations, which serve as your primary protection. These rules are typically stringent; for instance, in Miami, the Coast Guard routinely inspects boat documentation, with substantial fines for non-compliance. Additionally, all operators are legally mandated to carry insurance. You have the right to review these documents before embarkation.
We exclusively partner with reliable operators who have a proven track record of success and satisfied customers. Each operator must commit to our high standards of customer satisfaction and agree to provide boats that are clean and in excellent condition for their age. Generally, newer boats tend to be in better condition, and we maintain a large inventory of new boats. Please let us know if you prefer a recent model.
Furthermore, our brokers frequently attend charter shows and visiting days to inspect boats and meet the crews, providing you with personalized feedback. Many of our charter yachts also feature reviews and star ratings from previous clients, offering you first-hand insights into the quality of the yachts and the crew, ensuring a truly exceptional experience.
Why are only 12 people allowed on most boats?
“U.S. Coast Guard regulations stipulate that any vessel carrying more than 12 passengers, even if used as a private yacht, is classified as a passenger ship and must comply with stringent safety standards. This ensures the highest safety for all passengers, prioritizing their well-being.
Adhering to these regulations involves meeting a rigorous set of safety requirements, which are costly to implement. This is reflected in the higher charter costs for vessels licensed to carry more than 12 passengers compared to those licensed for up to 12 passengers. For many yacht owners, these additional expenses are not economically viable, as all charterers would incur higher costs regardless of their party size.
Fortunately, we offer a carefully curated selection of yachts suitable for larger groups, ensuring both safety and luxury for your sailing experience.”
